Dr. Renee Felicia Dorn has been involved with education for over 18 years starting with her job as a Peer Counselor/Tutor for high school students while in college at Prairie View A&M University. Upon graduating from Prairie View with her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration – Management and Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Renee began working for General Electric-Client Business Services, Inc. in Florida. After a year working for the corporation, Renee decided in order to move ahead, more education was needed, so she applied to law school and was accepted at Texas Southern University-Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, Texas. While in law school, Renee interned for the City of Houston Legal Department and enrolled in a Juvenile Justice class where she was able to visit local high schools and teach students different aspects of law such as the Texas Legal System including family law, consumer law, housing law, and criminal law.
After graduating from law school with her Juris Doctor degree, Dr. Renee Dorn started teaching at local high schools in Texas until she was able to find a permanent, full-time job in the legal profession. At one of the high schools that Renee frequently visited, the principal asked her to replace an instructor that was not returning to the school. At that point, Renee became an instructor for the high school teaching two Public Speaking classes and four English classes. While teaching, Renee worked on her professional development by taking a Human Resource class at Rice University in Houston, Texas and received a Certificate of Completion in Human Resource Management. At the end of the school year, Renee received a job offer that brought her back to California. The job was in the education field working for a non-profit organization that prepared students for college. Renee worked as the Director of Development which required her to meet with corporate and foundation executives to obtain funding for the non-profit organization. To enhance her fundraising efforts, Renee completed Summer and Fall courses at UCLA in the Fundraising Certificate Program. In addition to her fundraising duties, she also worked with students and parents explaining college and university requirements and opportunities. This also gave her an opportunity to discuss what to expect when living on campus while attending in-state and out-of-state colleges and universities.
While working for the non-profit, Renee joined the Prairie View Alumni – Los Angeles Chapter and served as Recording Secretary for a short period of time. At the next election, Renee was nominated for President of the alumni chapter and was elected unanimously. Renee has served as President of the Prairie View Alumni – Los Angeles Chapter for over six years and is on the Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association Board of Directors. She is very active with organizations that involve preparing and recruiting students for college, especially the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Renee is affiliated with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association (life member), the National Black MBA Association (life member), the Inglewood Leadership Council (life member), New Frontier Democratic Club (life member), the 51st Assembly District (Democratic delegate), the Inglewood Women of Vision, City of Inglewood Human Affairs Commission, City of Inglewood Civil Service Board of Review, City of Inglewood Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, the Los Angeles Inter-Alumni Council in association with the United Negro College Fund, and several other community organizations.
Renee currently works for the El Camino Community College District as a College/High School Liaison where she meets with college Vice Presidents, Deans, and Directors, as well as, high school Superintendents, Principals, and Counselors to coordinate college classes that will be held at high schools within El Camino’s district area. She works with approximately 18 public, private, and charter high schools in 8 different cities. Renee understands how difficult and rewarding it can be for college instructors to teach high school students since she was a high school teacher, as well as a college business instructor at West Los Angeles and East Los Angeles Colleges at night while working for El Camino College during the day. It is her desire to use the knowledge she acquired while working with various school districts in Los Angeles County to make the Inglewood Unified School District a model that the City of Inglewood and the nation will look to with pride.
